This section describes the SEG-Y revisions supported by Geocap.

SEG Y (1975)

This standard is covered. Any file stored on this format will be read by the SEGY-Tool.

SEG Y Revision 1 (2002)

This standard is covered with the exception of:

  • Extended textual file header

The Extended textual file header defined in Revision 1 allows for one or more 3200-byte records and provides additional space for recording required information about the SEG Y file.

Attempting to read a file stored on this format with an extended file header will cause the SEGY-Tool to fail.

SEG Y Revision 2 (2017)

This standard is not covered.

Most of the changes for Revision 2 involves data precision. The format, for example, allows for data to be stored as 8 byte samples.

In addition, trace headers can extend their previously fixed 240-byte size.

Files on this format that utilizes new Revision 2 functionality cannot be read by the SEGY-Tool.
