License File Installation

In this section

Introduction

Geocap uses licensing software from Gemalto. The official user documentation can be found here. This section describes how to configure this licensing system for your Geocap software.

Geocap for ArcGIS requires ArcMap 10 with licensing level of Basic or higher. This documentation assumes basic familiarity with ArcMap.

To install the license file the toolbar for the 3D Explorer must be enabled. The extensions Seismic Explorer and Maritime Delimitation includes the 3D Explorer and uses then the same toolbar for help.

  1. In ArcMap, click Customize -> Toolbars to see the list of available toolbars.
  2. Click the Geocap 3D Explorer toolbar to enable it.

The entries for managing the license can be found under the Help entry on the 3D Explorer toolbar. Click the Help button to see the entries in the menu:

License Models

Geocap for ArcGIS offers three different license models.

  • Trial license. This is a 30 - day license that is included with the software.
  • Node locked license. A license that is locked to a particular PC using a hardware identification system.
  • Network license . A license server manages the licenses for a particular number of users connected to the server. It is a so called floating license since any end user PC with a connection to the server can obtain a license. The license is released when the user session ends. The license is isssued for by Geocap for a certain number of users.

Trial License

The Geocap for ArcGIS extensions requires a license. A thirty-day trial license is normally included. You can use the Geocap for ArcGIS extensions out of the box for the duration of this period. When the trial period is over please contact Geocap sales for an extension.

To install an extended license:

  • In the 3D Explorer toolbar click Help then Install License... Follow the instructions.

After restarting ArcMap, the extensions can be enabled.

Computer locked license

For installation of a computer locked license the computer's lock code must be known:

  1. In the 3D Explorer toolbar click Help and then View Lock Code...The license information dialog is shown.
  2. Click CTRL+C to copy the content of the dialog. Paste the content into an e-mail and send to support@geocap.no. This information contains ids for some hardware parts of your computer used by the Gemalto licensing system. No personal information is involved.

When the computer locked license file is received from Geocap, it is installed the same way as a trial license:

  • In the 3D Explorer toolbar, click Help then Install License... Follow the instructions.

After restarting ArcMap, the extensions can be enabled.

Network license

A network license makes it possible for several users to share the Geocap for ArcGIS licenses. The number of users as specified in the license file can use the software simultaneously. The installation with a license server is a two-step procedure:

  1. Install the required server software and the license file on the server.
  2. Prepare the license on the client PC.

You only need to install the server software once. A new license file will usually have to be installed once every year.

When the license server is running and Geocap has been installed on the client PC, Geocap will automatically find the server using a broadcast mechanism. If this does not seem to work set the LSHOST environment variable to a comma separated list of hostnames.

Downloading the license server

The license server is not part of the standard Geocap distribution. Follow these steps to download and install the server.

  1. Determine which machine on your network should be the license server. This need not be a particularly powerful computer, but it must be able to connect to the machines that will run Geocap over the network.
  2. The server communicates using UDP so your firewall needs to open for this.
  3. Click here to download the license server software and associated tools.
  4. Locate the installer in the Server/Setup subfolder
  5. Click to install. Follow the instructions.

Installing the server license file

To use a server license you neeed to install a license file onto the server. The license file is issued by Geocap based on server hardware id and number of concurrent users.

To prepare a license file install follow these steps:

  1. In the Admin.Sta\Win32 subfolder of the license server distrubution package locate the wechoid utility. Double-click to open.
  2. Ensure that that ONLY the Disk ID is checked.
  3. Send the Selector and Code in an email to support@geocap.no. Also the number of concurrent users must be agreed upon.
  4. When you have received the license file from us, save it to disk on your server.
  5. Double-click Admin.net/Win32\WlmAdmin.exe to open the server administration utility.
  6. Click Edit and then Defined Server List.
  7. Enter LOCALHOST, the server name, or the server's IP address, and click Add and OK.
  8. Right click the new Defined Servers node and then click Add Feature > From a File > To Server and its File.
  9. Browse in the license file and click OK. This will also ensure that the license is activated during reboot of the computer.

After installing the license file features the WlmAdmin menu will look similar to this:

16. To verify that you are able to connect to the server from a client download the client demo utility. Unzip and open the slmdemo.exe file. Use Connect To to connect to the server. In feature enter one of the features in the license file, like geocap3dexplorer and the corresponding version, like 2.0. Click Get License to verify that the connection is in place.

The server license is now installed. Restart ArcMap and the Geocap for ArcGIS extension will use a broadcast mechanism to locate the license server. It will claim one license for the duration of the session. The license will be released when the session ends. This might take a few minutes.

Commuting

When using a network license it is occasionally convenient to checkout a license so that you may continue working without access to the licensing server.

For further documentation on this please consult the official Gemalto documentation. You will also need to download the commute tools.Â
