Install and start the Geocap software

1. Download the Geocap-X.x.x.msi from www.geocap.no. Go to the Download page and select the correct version. An account for login is required.

2. Double click the Geocap install-shield file Geocap-X.x.x.msi.

3. Click your way through the installation wizard.

4 a. Start Geocap on Windows 7 and older:

  • Click: Start > All Programs > Geocap-X.x.x - xx > Geocap-X.x.x - xx. 

4 b. Start Geocap on Windows 8.1:

  • Go to the Start screen.
  • Near the lower-left corner of the Start screen, click the arrow down and go to the Apps view. 
  • In the search field in the upper right corner, enter the text Geocap.
  • All the files installed by the installation wizard will be listed. (It is also possible to find the Geocap 7.x.x group without using the search field.)



  • Click on the Geocap 7.x.x entry to start the program.

  • To easier find the program next time, click the rightmost mouse button and get the menu:


  • Click Pin to Start to make a tile on the Start screen, and/or click Pin to taskbar to create the link on the task bar on your Desktop. 


4 c. Start Geocap on Windows 10:

  • Click: Start > All apps > Geocap-X.x.x - xx > Geocap-X.x.x - xx . 


5. When Geocap is starting first time, a message about creating a resource directory appears.


6. When not having a valid license, Geocap will report that the license request failed.


Computer locked or demo license

1. Start Geocap as described in Install and start the Geocap software. Geocap will report that the license request failed.

2. Click Computer locked/demo license.


3. Click Request a new license.

4. Copy the information and send it in an email to: support@geocap.no.

5. When you have received the license file from us, save it to disk. The exact location is not important, but you should make a note of it.

6. Start Geocap again and click Computer locked/demo license.

7. Click Install license file


8. Browse in the license file you saved on your disk and click OK.


  • Click OK


  • Click OK


9 a. On Windows 7:

  • Click: Start > All Programs > Geocap-7.x.x - xx > Licensing and right-click Initialize 7.1, then click Run as Administrator. (You only need to do this once for a particular computer.)

9 b. On Windows 8.1:

  • Go to the Start screen.

  • Near the lower-left corner of the Start screen, click the arrow down and go to the Apps view. 
  • In the search field in the upper right corner, enter the text Geocap.
  • All the files installed by the installation wizard will be listed. Find the Initialize 7.1 program.
  • Right-click Initialize 7.0, then click Run as Administrator. (You only need to do this once for a particular computer.)




9 c. On Windows 10:

  • Click: Start > All apps > Geocap-7.x.x - xx > and right-click Initialize 7.1, then click Run as Administrator. (You only need to do this once for a particular computer.)


10. Start Geocap again.


Dongle license

As of 2023 Geocap no longer supports dongle licensing. Please contact support@geocap.no to find your best licensing method going forward.


Being a physical device the dongle will usually be shipped using conventional mail.

1. The license file is usually sent by e-mail. Save the license file to disk. The exact location is not important, but you should make a note of it.

2. Determine on which machine your dongle should be installed.

3, alternative A. 
  Install the dongle driver from the Start menu .(Start > All Programs > Geocap-7.x > Licensing > Sentinel Dongle Driver )

3, alternative B.
  If 3, alternative A, for some reason does not work with your dongle, you can try to download the latest version of the dongle driver from Sentinel:

  • Download the Sentinel Protection Installer (under Windows Driver & Utilities) from this link and save the file to your computer (Desktop).
  • Unzip or open the SentinelProtectionInstaller7.x.x.zip and save the file to your Desktop.
  • Double click the Sentinel Protection Installer 7.x.x.exe file, and the dongle driver will be installed.

4. Insert the dongle into a USB slot in your PC.

5. Start Geocap as described in Install and start the Geocap software. Geocap will report that the license request failed.

6. Click USB Dongle license


7. Click Install license file

8. Browse in the file you saved on your disk and click OK.

  • Click OK


  • Click OK


9 a. On Windows 7: 

  • Click: Start > All Programs > Geocap-7.x.x - xx > Licensing and right-click Initialize 7.1, then click Run as Administrator. (You only need to do this once for a particular computer.)

9 b. On Windows 8.1: 

  • Go to the Start screen.

License server

Installing Geocap with a license server is a two-step procedure:

  1. Installing the required server software and the license file on the server.
  2. Installing Geocap on the client PC.

You only need to install the server software once. A new license file will usually have to be installed once every year. After that, all upgrades of the Geocap software are done on the client PC side.

When the license server is running and Geocap has been installed on the client PC, Geocap will automatically find the server using a broadcast mechanism. If this does not seem to work set the LSHOST environment variable to a comma separated list of hostnames.

Installing on the server

1. Determine which machine on your network should be the license server. This need not be a particularly powerful computer, but it must be able to connect to the machines that will run Geocap over the network.

2. Download the Lock Code (Wechoid) software to the selected server from this link.

3. Start the downloaded (wechoid) software and make sure that ONLY the Disk ID is checked.


4. Send the Selector and Code in an email to support@geocap.no.

5. When you have received the license file from us, save it to disk. The exact location is not important, but you should make a note of it.

6. Download the server software for the safenet license server from this link and save the file to your computer (Desktop).

7. Unzip or open the Safenet-server-8.x.x.zip.

8. Double click the setup.exe file in the unzipped folder and follow the Sentinel RMS License Manager installation wizard.

9. Download the server tools from this link.

10. Unzip or open the servertools.zip

11. Double click the WlmAdmin.exe file in the unzipped folder.

12. Click Edit and then Defined Server List.

13. Enter LOCALHOST, the server name, or the server's IP address, and click Add and OK.


14. Right click the new Defined Servers node and then click Add Feature > From a File > To Server and its File.

15. Browse in the license file and click OK. This will also ensure that the license is activated during reboot of the computer.

Installing on the client PC

1. Install and Start Geocap as described in Install and start the Geocap software. Geocap will report that the license request failed.

2. In the pop-up window that appears, select License server.

  • Click OK


License server with a dongle

14. Click Edit and then Defined Server List.

16. Right click the new Defined Servers node and then click Add Feature > From a File > To Server and its File.
