Introduction

Digitizing is one of the most important ways the user can interact with Geocap to create new dataset. In contrast to typing in numbers in an editor, the digitizer gives the user the ability to interact with graphically displayed data.

In this section:

Quick digitizing

Make sure you have displayed all relevant data in 2D mode before you start the digitizing. The Quick digitizer is started from Tools > Quick Digitizing.

The quick digitizer menu

Quick guide

  1. Click Start digitizing and use the left mouse button to digitize.
  2. Click Connect to start if you want to close the polygon.
  3. Click Stop digitizing to save the line/polygon.

A digitized line is saved in the workspace by default. Use the Save digitized line also in folder option to save it directly in the project. Just tick the check box and browse in the folder you would like to save it to.

Digitizing in 3D

Quick digitizing operates in 2D mode by default and one can just click with the left button key to digitize. It is however possible to enter 3D mode and perform digitizing in 3D.

Digitize on a surface

  1. Set the Select mode to 3D.
  2. Click Start digitizing and press Y on your keyboard to digitize on a surface.
  3. Click Connect to start if you want to close the polygon.
  4. Click Stop digitizing to save the line/polygon.

You can digitize directly on a flat manipulator surface in 3D. Open the manipulator from Tools > Manipulator.

Digitize freely

  1. Set the Select mode to 3D.
  2. Click Start digitizing and press P on your keyboard to digitize on a surface.
  3. Click Connect to start if you want to close the polygon.
  4. Click Stop digitizing to save the line/polygon.

3D digitizing is made easy by using y to attach to a surface and the manipulator to get control elsewhere. A typical case for 3D digitizing is to supply some extra points to grid input around a salt diapir or specific structure that is not properly covered by the input points.

Edit points and lines

The Edit points and lines can be used to edit imported or digitized polydata.
The command lets you:

  • Move points
  • Change value of a point
  • Delete points
  • Select points
  • Digitize
