How do I measure distances?
The distance between two points following the earth curvature may be calculated using the Distance Calculations dialog which is available on the Tools menu in Geocaps main window.
- Make sure that the datum and coordinate system are set to the same as the displayed dataset(s).
- Set the distance calculation method. We recommend Vincenty calculation for geodetic correct distances.
- Select a distance unit
The bottom part of the dialog will give details about the position of the marker point, and the distance between the two last marker points.
In order to set the marker point in 2D mode, simply click in the display window using the left mouse button. In 3D mode, the marker may be placed on a surface by positioning the mouse cursor point in the display window, and pressing y on the keyboard.
In order measure the distance between two points accurately, follow this procedure:
- Display the points or lines between points.
- Pick points by positioning the mouse cursor over/near the points and press j on the keyboard. Note that this pics points (not lines between points) on any polydata-set visualized from the project. This functionality is valid from Geocap 6.3.4. Note that the horizontal distance is listed in the panel as horizontal distance while the spatial distance that is equal to or greater than the horizontal distance is listed as distance.
