E. Import Seismic and Navigation
Introduction
In this section we will go through the import of 2D seismic lines in SEG-Y format and navigation lines in UKOOA format. Sometimes it can be very difficult to import seismic lines because different companies use different settings, the header could be missing or wrong and so on. However, the SEG-Y reader in Geocap is very flexible, so you should be able to import any SEG-Y line. Read more about the SEG-Y import here: Importing SEG-Y
Exercises
2D SEG-Y
The demo dataset contains numerous seismic 2D lines. In this example, the user will import seismic lines from 2 different seismic 2D surveys. (Note: It was previously four, but for rational reasons it is cut down to two).
Import 2D SEG-Y files
- Create 2 sub-folders under your 2. Seismic Data folder called Survey3 and Survey4.
- Right-click on the Survey3 folder and select Import > SEG-Y 2D...
- Browse in the first file in the \data\03Seismic\S3_UTM50S folder, to investigate the format settings before reading all the lines.
- Set Shot point to byte position 5-8 (typical Kingdom export).
- Press the Scan button and select the Scan results tab. Your result should like this:
- Check that the X and Y coordinates, Z and shot points looks reasonable.
- Browse in all the SEG-Y files in the \inbox\03Seismic\S3_UTM50S folder.
- Click Execute and close the dialogue when completed.
- Repeat this procedure for Survey 4
UKOOA Navigation
The ASCII import reads data from an ASCII file into the Geocap project. ASCII import can be used for many types text data files, e.g. whether the data columns have fixed or variable width, and also whether the coordinates are in X Y or Lat Lon. When data is read into the project, it can be organized in a number of different ways. It is for example possible to tell Geocap to split the data into different dataset whenever a value in a specific file column changes. There are also options for creating project folders whenever a column value changes.
The ASCII import has the ability to read more fields than X Y Z (text or numbers). In many cases the user will notice that when importing data in Geocap, the ASCII import will appear ready and pre-set to read the data in question. For instance, when reading UKOOA data, the ASCII import will appear properly adjusted to the UKOOA format - saving the user from having to set this from scratch.
Import UKOOA navigation files
- Create a Generic top level folder called 4. Navigation with two sub level folders called Survey3 and Survey4.
- Right-click on the Survey3 folder under 4. Navigation and select Import > UKOOA Lat Lon...
- Browse in the file UKOOA_Survey3.asc in the \data\04Navigation folder.
- Make sure your import menu looks like the image below
- Click Execute
- Repeat the same steps for UKOOA_Survey4.asc
