Importing Shapefiles

Introduction

There are two ways to import shapefiles in Geocap.

  • Generic import
  • Geospatial File

Importing the shapefile as a geospatial file will let you filter and edit attributes in the dataset at a later stage. Using the Generic import will not preserve the attributes in the shapefile and is thus imported as VTK data.

Import as VTK

Use the automatic settings in the Generic import to import a shapefile as VTK. Note that shape files always are more than 1 file (sometimes 3, sometimes 5). When reading shape, select the file with the .shp extension. Geocap will automatically find and read the other files if they are located in the same directory on disk.

Import as Geospatial File

Select new Data Source in the project toolbar:

  1. Leave the Connection Name empty (the shapefile name will be set as connection name)
  2. Set Datasource to Geospatial File
  3. Keep Vector Data as Datatype.
  4. Browse for you file (*.shp)
  5. Click Connect
